Countdown on for big 2015 tourism conference in Orlando

In about a year, Orlando will host the most important conference in the travel and tourism industry, when the IPW annual meeting rolls into the Orange County Convention Center. For tourism and travel officials, hosting IPW — formerly known as International Pow Wow — is a little like having the NBA All-Star game or Super Bowl come to town. The event — to be held from May 30 to June 3, 2015 — will likely attract more than 6,000 tourism industry representatives, many of them travel package buyers and tour organizers.

When the conference ends, local officials hope they'll go home and regale potential clients with tales of Central Florida's sunny weather and world-class attractions. The convention center often hosts bigger events, but few are more significant.

"It's not so much the size of the conference as who the delegates represent," said George Aguel, president and CEO of Visit Orlando, the region's tourism marketing agency. "They're tour operators and travel industry media from all over the world. And they're all in one spot."

Visit Orlando, which works with the U.S. Travel Association on the show, recently began working to create a host committee made up of representatives from the local travel and tourism industry. Visit Orlando, which gets about 60 percent of its budget from the tourist-development tax, is still developing a budget for the project.

Convention center officials say they expect attendance to exceed the 5,100 people who came in 2010 — the last time Orlando hosted the event. The conference's estimated economic benefit — in the short term — is about $11.8 million.

But the real impact of IPW — held this year in Chicago — is likely to ripple through the local economy for two or three years, as tour operators and travel agents book future trips based on what they experienced at the conference.

Early this year, the U.S. Travel Association estimated that Washington, D.C., the 2017 host city, will see an additional 1 million visitors in the three years following the event. Tourism spending over that time is projected to rise by $1.6 billion.

The association said Las Vegas, which hosted IPW in 2013, would book $350 million in future travel in the years after the event. Show organizers say Orlando will see a similar benefit.

"We get to showcase what we have to travel agents and tour organizers — anyone with anything to do with bringing tourists here," said Kathie Canning, the convention center's executive director. "You can't buy that kind of exposure."

While they're here, attendees will be treated like VIPs.

Aguel said that typically, local theme parks offer special after-hours events, open only to IPW delegates. Visit Orlando, said spokesman Brian Martin, will likely organize shopping trips — to showcase major outlets —and tours to highlight Central Florida's natural beauty.

‘Extra excitement’ in Clare for 2014 tourism season

As he was preparing for a Clare tourism information session and expo – to be held Thursday, May 22, in Little Brook – Clare tourism director Larry Peach said he was hearing some positive things about the 2014 tourism season.

“With the return of the Yarmouth ferry, I think there’s a little extra excitement in the air and also we’ve got a lot of new experiences and activities on the go, in the works,” he said.

The information session/expo will take place at Evelina’s Râpure (the site of the former Clare social club) and is scheduled for noon to 4 p.m.

The event is a chance to bring tourism operators together and discuss what’s going on in Clare tourism, Peach said.

“It’s also basically a soft launch for our new map brochure, which is currently being distributed, and also there’ll be a session on how to improve tourism stakeholder engagement in local projects,” he said.

Event participants will, among other things, hear about tourism projects and partnerships. There will be interactive activities, a social media workshop and special guests.

Peach will be one of the day’s speakers.

“There are several partnership projects that involve collaborating with neighbouring regions, both north and south of us, so that will be part of my presentation,” he said.

Those attending the information session/expo also will hear about plans for Clare’s Acadian festival, the oldest of the region’s Acadian festivals, an annual celebration of Acadian culture and heritage that goes back nearly six decades and which, next year, will mark a milestone in its history.

“The Festival acadien is going to be providing an update on their plans for not only this year,” Peach said, “but they’ll talk a little about the 60th anniversary … coming up in 2015.”

Contacted three days before the scheduled arrival of the Nova Star in Yarmouth and the start of regular ferry service between Yarmouth and Portland – restoring a sea link between southwestern Nova Scotia and New England that was gone for four summers (2010 to 2013) – Peach said the new service is contributing to a positive view about this year’s tourism season among people in Clare.

“I think certainly the expectation is we’re going to see a lot more American plates this year than in the previous few years,” he said. “As you know, tourism is cyclical and economies are cyclical and it appears that the American economy is rebounding.”

Referring to the 2014 tourism season, to the new ship and to the various efforts that have gone into promoting the region, he said, “It’s an opportunity to keep visitors here longer and we need to continue working together to achieve that goal.”

Singapore Tourism – A personal experience Over the last few decades, Singapore has become one of the most popular tourist destinations of Asia. I visited Singapore in 2006 on my way back from India. It turned out to be of one of the most memorable vacations that I have ever had. Unlike most of the other Asian countries Singapore is very well organised and has an excellent transportation system. There is so much to do in this small country that i wish i was able to spend some more time there. We got our booking done from singapore airlines itself which gave us a good deal on the hotel, we stayed on the Orchard Road which is one of the main attractions of the country. Most of the high end shops, bars and restaurants are on the Orchard road itself and the nightlife is very good. We didn’t do anything much on the first day since we reached the hotel by the evening.

The next day we went to Botanical Gardens also known as Orchid Garden, we took a taxi from our hotel which was very reasonable. This is an amazing place with 3000 tropical and subtropical plant species. Soon after this we took the ‘SIA hop- on bus’ and we stopped at almost all of the stops. This is a air conditioned bus that lets you hop on and hop off at any designated stop, this is a good way of covering most of the attractions of the country. We stopped at places like Little India, China Town, Arab Street and major shopping malls.

On the third day we went to the Sentosa Island, we booked the package at our hotel itself, so a bus picked us up in the morning and took us to a spot where we had to take electronic cable cars inorder to reach the Island. This was great fun and we got some excellent views of the Island and the nearby area. We spent one whole day on this island, some of the best thing to see and do over here are-

Underwater world, Dolphin lagoon, Butterfly Park & Insect Kingdom Museum, The Merlion area and Songs Of the sea. ‘Songs of the sea’ is a musical fountain show that takes place in the evening when it gets a little dark, this is a must see on the Island, it was the best show that i’ve ever seen of this kind.

On the fourth and the last day of our stay in singapore, we spent some time shopping on the Orchard road. There is so much to see and do in this place that four days were just not enough. Some of the must see and do things in Singapore are – Jurong Bird Park, The Singapore Zoo, Night Safari, Singapore boat ride.
